Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Civil War patriotic token combining Fuld obverse die 40, a military-themed design inscribed "THE ARMY & NAVY", with reverse die 193 bearing a design featuring "THE ARMY & NA". This military and patriotic obverse die family encompasses a range of wartime themes β from specific slogans like "Millions for Defence" to general military tributes. These dies reflect the diverse patriotic sentiments expressed through the Civil War token medium. The brass composition, while less common than copper, produced tokens with a distinctive yellow-gold appearance. Waterbury, Connecticut β the brass capital of America β supplied much of the raw material for token production. Dated 1863. Die sinkers produced patriotic tokens on hand-operated screw presses capable of striking several hundred pieces per hour. The largest manufacturers maintained multiple presses and employed teams of workers to meet the enormous wartime demand.
