Description
Part of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series, the 1862 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is a Gold Quarter Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint. The Philadelphia Mint struck 98,508 quarter eagles dated 1862. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons. Quarter eagles were struck at Philadelphia and San Francisco while gold coins were hoarded and greenbacks circulated at a discount. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7796.
