Description
The 1862 Liberty Gold Dollar is a Gold Dollar from the Philadelphia Mint, belonging to the Large Indian Princess Head Gold Dollars 1856-1889 series. The U.S. Mint produced 1.4 million examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 100% of production. The obverse features a female figure wearing a feathered headdress, representing Liberty in the guise of a Native American princess with a larger, more detailed head design and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR. Wartime production at Philadelphia only. Gold coins hoarded as greenbacks depreciated. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $466 to $1.0K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 14.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
