1861 Parsons Two-and-a-Half Dollar - Brass
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The 1861 John Parsons & Company Two-and-a-Half Dollar in brass is an off-metal striking of the Parsons quarter eagle dies. Brass, with its yellowish color approximating gold, was a natural choice for off-metal territorial patterns intended to simulate the appearance of gold originals. The brass quarter eagle pattern carries the full Parsons design in a base metal that, when freshly struck, could approximate the look of low-karat gold. The smaller 18mm diameter and lighter weight immediately distinguish it from the gold original to anyone handling it. Off-metal quarter eagle patterns from Parsons are extraordinarily scarce, making them among the most elusive pieces in all of Colorado territorial numismatics. The Parsons quarter eagle itself is rare in gold; off-metal versions are almost legendary.
Rarity Notes
Extremely rare. Brass off-metal Parsons quarter eagles may be unique or nearly so.
