About This Coin

Operating in the mountain mining town of Tarryall (later renamed Hamilton), Colorado Territory, Parsons & Company produced private gold coins in 1861 that rank among the rarest and most sought-after territorial gold issues in American numismatics. Dr. John Parsons, a physician who had come west during the Pikes Peak gold rush, established a small coining operation to convert raw gold dust into a more convenient medium of exchange for the isolated mining community. Parsons issued gold pieces in the $2.50 and $5 denominations, using crude hand-engraved dies that produced coins of distinctive but unrefined appearance compared to federal issues. The obverse designs typically featured a quartz-crushing stamp mill — a direct reference to the gold extraction technology central to the local economy — while reverses carried the denomination, date, and issuer identification. Total production was extremely limited, and Parsons & Co. coins are believed to survive in quantities numbering in the low dozens at most across all denominations and die varieties. A notable auction result reached $100,000 in VF20 grade at Bowers & Ruddy, establishing the type as a six-figure rarity even in circulated condition. The coins hold particular significance for Colorado numismatic history, as they document the brief period when the territory's remoteness from federal institutions necessitated local monetary solutions. Authentication is essential for any claimed Parsons specimen, as the extreme values involved have attracted both deliberate counterfeits and optimistic misattributions. Collectors should seek pieces certified by a major grading service with documented provenance extending, where possible, to established territorial gold collections. The type represents frontier ingenuity and economic necessity in equal measure.
