Description

Northern loyalists founded the Loyal National League early in 1861 to answer Copperhead propaganda spread by Southern sympathizers in the border country, from Missouri and Kentucky to the southern parts of Illinois and Ohio. HK-875 carries its creed. The obverse reads "Pledged to Unconditional Loyalty to the Government and to National Unity" above an eagle with a shield on its breast, the league's name around the top. The reverse shows crossed United States flags under "A Common Union," then a pledge to uphold the nation's power, glory and integrity, and "Under Authority of the Loyal National League" around the base. The piece is undated, and its designer, die sinker, maker and issuer are all unknown. HK-875 is copper, 35 mm; silver is HK-874 and white metal HK-875a.
