Description
Civil War store card issued by S. Goetz of Non-Contemporary. This piece is cataloged as a non-contemporary Civil War token: a restrike, copy or collector piece made after the war. Non-contemporary pieces were made after the war as restrikes, copies or collector pieces. The coin shortage was exacerbated by the simultaneous withdrawal of gold and silver from circulation following the suspension of specie payments in December 1861. Copper was the metal most used for Civil War tokens; brass, copper-nickel, white metal, German silver and silver also occur.
