Description
Civil War merchant token bearing the name of Fond du Lac; Mason/Mason in Wisconsin. Wisconsin was a growing frontier state with Milwaukee as its largest commercial center, and its merchants issued tokens as practical solutions to the coin shortage. Merchants typically ordered tokens from die-sinkers who maintained inventories of patriotic and advertising dies for rapid production. Until Congress banned private tokens in 1864, tokens like this one circulated freely as cent substitutes in Northern commerce. Collectors bought Civil War tokens even while they circulated, so numismatic strikes often survive in high grades.
