Description
The 1860 (S) Liberty Head Eagle represents a San Francisco Mint issue from the Liberty Head Eagles 1838-1907 series. With a mintage of 5,000, this is an extremely rare issue — the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only 16% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Last New Orleans eagles before the Civil War. San Francisco production was strong. San Francisco's storied mint, born of the California Gold Rush, has evolved into the primary producer of U.S. proof coins. Estimated market value ranges from $8.5K to $81K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 16.7 grams, 26.8 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
