Description

Judd-272 Gilt is a gilt copper proof of the 1860 half eagle pattern, preserving the design of the five-dollar gold piece in an accessible base-metal format with gold surface treatment. The obverse features the Liberty Head with coronet design that had been standard on half eagles since Christian Gobrecht's reworking of the type in 1839, with thirteen stars and the date 1860. The reverse displays the heraldic eagle with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination FIVE D. Half eagle patterns from 1860 are of particular interest because the denomination was undergoing renewed scrutiny as Civil War tensions escalated. The gold coinage, which had circulated freely throughout the 1850s thanks to California Gold Rush production, would soon vanish from everyday commerce as the conflict triggered hoarding on an unprecedented scale. By late 1861, gold coins had effectively disappeared from circulation in the Northern states, not to return until the resumption of specie payments in 1879. The gilt copper format indicates this piece was produced for evaluation or cabinet purposes rather than as a circulation trial. The gilding simulated the weight appearance of a gold coin while allowing the Mint to avoid the strict accounting requirements that governed gold usage. Gilt copper patterns of gold denominations are consistently among the most sought-after pieces in the Judd catalog because they offer collectors an affordable entry point to designs that are prohibitively expensive or unique in their original gold composition. The 1860 date places this pattern at the very cusp of the Civil War, lending it additional historical resonance.
