Description
Judd-264, Pollock-312, is a proof cent pattern struck in copper-nickel alloy using the new 1860 Indian Head cent obverse paired with a reverse featuring the oak wreath and shield design that would be adopted for regular production that year. This pattern represents one of the earliest strikings of the new oak wreath reverse concept, replacing the laurel wreath used on Indian Head cents in 1859. Chief Engraver James B. Longacre designed both the obverse Indian Head motif and the new reverse wreath arrangement. The copper-nickel composition matches the alloy used for regular production cents from 1859 through 1864, before the wartime transition to bronze.
