Description
Tom Sayers, the other man in the 1860 fight at Farnborough, has his own medal: HK-10a shows his bust facing left under "Thomas S. Sayers, the Champion of England," with the microscopic signature of F. B. Smith & Hartmann, N.Y., beneath. The reverse is the wreathed inscription shared with the Heenan pieces, which names the two men and calls their April 1860 meeting a contest for the championship of the world. Sayers was born in Brighton, worked as a bricklayer and had held the championship since 1857. The bout with John C. Heenan ran more than two hours and ended as a draw after 42 rounds, when spectators swarmed the ring after Sayers injured his arm; he left the ring for good afterward. This piece is white metal, 34 mm, and a copper striking of the Sayers design is HK-10b.
