Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This brass token with plain edge cataloged as GW-430 was produced circa 1860 by Ludwig Christian Lauer of Nuremberg, Germany, and served as an award medal. Lauer was one of the most important European medal and token manufacturers of the nineteenth century, whose firm (L. Chr. Lauer) produced millions of medals, tokens, and gaming pieces for export worldwide. The Washington portrait on this award medal was specifically designed for the American market, where Lauer tokens circulated alongside domestically produced pieces. The designation as an "Award Medal" indicates this was intended for use as a prize or recognition piece, for scholastic achievement, civic service, or competitive events. Lauer's products are recognized by their consistently high quality of die work, often rivaling or exceeding American-made pieces. The Nuremberg token-making industry, of which Lauer was the dominant firm, supplied the global market with portrait tokens, gaming counters, and commemorative medals throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
