Description
This small brass uniface token, cataloged as GW-151A, was produced circa 1838 by the firm of Bale and Smith. At 21mm in diameter, this piece is classified as a medalet or token rather than a full-sized medal. The uniface format, with design elements on only one side, indicates either a deliberate production choice or an unfinished piece that was distributed without receiving a reverse impression. Bale and Smith operated as die-sinkers and token manufacturers, producing commercial tokens and medalets for various clients. The Washington portrait on this piece served as an advertisement for the firm's capabilities while simultaneously capitalizing on the enduring commercial appeal of Washington's image. Brass was an inexpensive and attractive alloy for small tokens, providing a gold-like color that enhanced the piece's visual appeal. The circa 1838 date places this token in the Jacksonian era, when the token economy was thriving in America and small-denomination private tokens supplemented official coinage in everyday commerce.
Rarity Notes
Rare. Small uniface tokens from this period were produced in limited numbers. The GW-151A Bale and Smith variety is seldom offered in the numismatic market.
