Description

This brass token cataloged as GW-276 with reeded edge commemorates Valley Forge as number eleven in the "Sage's Historical Tokens" series, produced circa 1860. Charles F. Sage of New York produced a series of historical tokens depicting significant sites and events from the American Revolution, with each piece numbered sequentially. Token number eleven in this series honors Valley Forge, the winter encampment of 1777-1778 that became the defining trial of the Continental Army. Sage's series was an early example of an intentionally organized collecting set — a marketing innovation that encouraged collectors to acquire the complete series. The brass composition with reeded edge gave these tokens a professional, coin-like quality, while the numbering system created built-in collectibility. Sage's Historical Tokens are valued today both individually as Washington and Revolutionary War commemoratives and collectively as a pioneering example of structured numismatic collecting programs.
