Description
Part of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series, the 1859 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle - New Reverse is a Gold Quarter Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint. With a mintage of 39,364, this is a scarce issue — ranked 3rd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 41% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Small mintages at Philadelphia and San Francisco; the denomination was declining in commercial importance. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $948 to $3.9K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7788.
