Description
Part of the Indian Princess Three Dollars 1854-1889 series, the 1859 Indian Princess Three Dollar is a dollar from the Philadelphia Mint. With a mintage of 15,558, this is a less common issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 99% of production. The obverse features a female figure wearing a feathered headdress, representing Liberty in the guise of a Native American princess, similar to but distinct from the gold dollar design and the reverse displays a wreath of tobacco, wheat, corn, and cotton enclosing the denomination 3 DOLLARS and date. Modest Philadelphia mintage. The denomination served no practical commercial purpose. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $1.6K to $11K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 5.02 grams, 20.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
