Description

The 1859 octagonal gold half dollar BG-902 is a California fractional gold piece of Breen and Gillio's second period with a Liberty head obverse. Breen and Gillio's second period (1858 to 1882 in their second edition, 1859 to 1882 in the first) holds the pieces jewelers made mostly as souvenirs and charms; the act of June 8, 1864 made private coinage unlawful, and Secret Service seizures had ended the trade by 1883. Auction catalogue descriptions attribute it to Frontier, Deviercy & Co. The Heritage catalogue of the Bass collection, as quoted by MacMillan counts eleven obverse stars. It pairs the reverse of BG-901 with an obverse showing a broader bust. Catalogue number: BG-902. PCGS number 10760.
