Description

Part of the Large Indian Princess Head Gold Dollars 1856-1889 series, the 1859 (C) Liberty Gold Dollar is a Gold Dollar from the Charlotte Mint. The Charlotte Mint struck 5,235 gold dollars dated 1859. The obverse features a female figure wearing a feathered headdress, representing Liberty in the guise of a Native American princess with a larger, more detailed head design and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR. Charlotte struck its last gold dollars this year. Coined at the Charlotte Mint, a gold-only facility that operated in North Carolina for just 23 years before the Civil War ended its production. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.672 grams, 15 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7552.
