Description
This octagonal California gold dollar, dated 1859, is BG-1101 in the Breen-Gillio catalogue of California fractional gold and belongs to Period Two, the later pieces made mainly as souvenirs. Period Two pieces were made by San Francisco jewelers from the late 1850s to the early 1880s, mainly to sell as keepsakes of the Gold Rush; they state a denomination in dollars or cents, carry much less gold than their face value, and were made in defiance of the Act of June 8, 1864 against private coinage (Locke FAQ; Statutes at Large). The NGC census lists it as "1859 OCTAG LIBERTY BG-1101 G$1", a Liberty head type. Catalogue number: BG-1101 (Breen-Gillio). PCGS number 10912.
