Designated Snow-PR1 in Rick Snow's comprehensive die variety reference for Flying Eagle cents, this 1858 proof striking pairs the Small Letters obverse die with a reverse exhibiting the distinctive High Leaves configuration — where the wreath leaves beneath the letters "C" and "T" in CENT are positioned noticeably higher than on the standard Small Letters reverse, approaching the leaf height normally associated with the Large Letters reverse type. It pairs the Small Letters obverse with the High Leaves reverse used on all 1857 cents and on some of 1858. The Flying Eagle cent, designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, was struck from 1856 to 1858 and replaced by the Indian Head cent in 1859. Proofs from 1858 were struck at the Philadelphia Mint for distribution to collectors and dignitaries, and the Small Letters High Leaves combination represents a distinct die pairing within an already limited proof production. The obverse features Longacre's eagle in flight adapted from the 1856 pattern cent, surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA in the Small Letters format, while the reverse wreath of corn, wheat, cotton and tobacco encircles ONE CENT with the tell-tale elevated leaf positions that define this variety.
