Description

Cataloged as Judd-218, this pattern cent pairs the Large Letters Flying Eagle obverse (Obverse 4) with the agricultural wreath reverse from the regular cent issue. The obverse features the Flying Eagle design with the larger letter variety of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date 1858, while the reverse shows the familiar wreath of corn, wheat, cotton, and tobacco encircling ONE CENT. Struck in copper with a plain edge, J-218 mirrors J-217 in concept but uses the Large Letters obverse rather than the Small Letters version. Like J-217, this combination of two regular-production die elements within the pattern series served as a baseline reference. The Large Letters obverse (Obverse 4) appears across several Judd numbers, including the dateless J-201 and the laurel wreath pairing of J-196, giving collectors a way to compare how the same obverse interacted with different reverse designs.
