Description

Judd-211 is an 1858 Indian Head cent pattern pairing Obverse 8 (the Indian Head design dated 1858) with Reverse B (an oak wreath with arrows below, tied with ribbon, open at the top, and ONE CENT at the center). Multiple die pairs are cataloged under the J-211 designation, with Pollock distinguishing between narrow bust (P-255) and rounded bust (P-262) obverse varieties. The rounded bust variety is more commonly encountered and features the broader bust point treatment characteristic of the later 1860-1864 Indian Head cent obverse die. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge, J-211 specimens appear in both proof and uncirculated formats. This die combination was included as part of the 12-piece pattern sets sold by the Mint, ensuring its survival in appreciable numbers despite the many die varieties cataloged under this single Judd number.

Rarity Notes

R.4 overall. Multiple die pairs exist; individual die combinations range from R.4 to R.7.
