Description

Judd-204 is an 1858 cent pattern pairing Obverse 6 (the Small or "Skinny" Flying Eagle by Paquet) with Reverse C (an oak wreath with a broad ornamental shield at the apex, arrows below, and ONE CENT at the center). The scrawny eagle with aggressive open talons creates a notably awkward appearance that drew criticism from contemporary observers and modern numismatists alike. The ornamental shield on the reverse was designed by Paquet and has been sometimes mistaken for a harp. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge, this is one of the more commonly encountered 1858 patterns, with as many as 200 examples struck across all die pairs. Specimens were sold both as part of 12-piece sets and individually by the Mint.

Rarity Notes
