Description

Judd-202 is an 1858 cent pattern pairing Obverse 6 (the Small or "Skinny" Flying Eagle, a distinctly smaller and more delicate eagle in flight with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and 1858 below) with Reverse A (the regular agricultural wreath used on circulation Flying Eagle cents, composed of corn, wheat, cotton, and tobacco). The Small Eagle obverse was designed by Anthony C. Paquet and featured a more aerodynamic, slender eagle that addressed the striking problems of the regular Flying Eagle design by reducing the depth of relief. While the design struck well technically, Mint officials found the scrawny eagle aesthetically unappealing. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge, this pattern was included in the 12-piece sets sold to collectors.
