Description
Judd-199 is an 1858 Flying Eagle cent pattern pairing Obverse 4 (the regular Flying Eagle die with Large Letters) with Reverse D (a laurel wreath tied with ribbon below, with ONE CENT at the center). This represents the Large Letters counterpart to J-194, combining the older obverse hub with the laurel wreath that would ultimately be adopted for the 1859 Indian Head cent. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge, this pattern is notable as an extremely rare die combination despite the relatively common Judd number designation. The survival of examples in varying die states indicates that production extended beyond the initial 1858 striking period, as the Mint continued to fill collector demand for these pattern cents into the early 1860s.
Rarity Notes
R.6 to R.7 as a die combination. Scarcer than the Judd number indicates.
