Description
Judd-198 is an 1858 Flying Eagle cent pattern pairing Obverse 4 (the regular Flying Eagle die with Large Letters) with Reverse C (an oak wreath with a broad ornamental shield at the apex, arrows below, and ONE CENT at the center). This is the Large Letters counterpart to J-193, which uses the same reverse paired with the Small Letters obverse. The ornamental shield atop the wreath is attributed to Anthony C. Paquet and represents one of the more elaborate reverse treatments in the 1858 pattern series. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge, examples were produced as part of the 12-piece pattern sets distributed by the Mint. The combination of the older Large Letters obverse with experimental reverses allowed Mint officials to compare designs across both hub varieties simultaneously.
