Description
Judd-193 is an 1858 Flying Eagle cent pattern pairing Obverse 5 (the regular Flying Eagle die with Small Letters) with Reverse C (an oak wreath with arrows below, tied with ribbon, and a broad ornamental shield at the apex of the wreath, with ONE CENT at the center). The ornamental shield is the work of Anthony C. Paquet, the assistant engraver at the Mint, though contemporary observers objected that it had the appearance of a harp. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge, this pattern was part of the systematic exploration of reverse designs during the Flying Eagle to Indian Head cent transition of 1858. Like other members of the 12-piece pattern sets, examples were sold to numismatists by the Mint, and additional specimens were struck over subsequent years as stock-in-trade items.
