Description

Judd-211 is an 1858 Indian Head cent pattern pairing Obverse 8 (the Indian Head design dated 1858, narrow bust point variety) with Reverse B (an oak wreath with arrows below, tied with ribbon, open at the top, and ONE CENT at the center). This coin uses the same oak wreath reverse as J-209, but is distinguished by a different die variety of the Indian Head obverse featuring a narrower bust point. Multiple Pollock numbers have been assigned depending on the specific die combination: Pollock-255 for the narrow bust with centered date, and Pollock-262 for other die pairings. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge, this pattern is notable because the narrow bust Indian Head obverse die was also used to strike the regular issue Indian Head cents from 1859 to 1860. Only about 9 examples of the narrow bust variety are known, with one in the Smithsonian.

Rarity Notes

R.4 as a Judd variety; R.7 as a narrow bust die combination. Only ~9 narrow bust examples known.
