Description
The 1857 (S) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is a Gold Quarter Eagle produced at the San Francisco Mint as part of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 69,200, this is a less common issue — ranked 3rd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 22% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Only Philadelphia and San Francisco struck quarter eagles as Southern branch mint production wound down. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $948 to $17K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7785.
