Description
The 1857 Indian Princess Three Dollar, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, is part of the Indian Princess Three Dollars 1854-1889 collection. With a mintage of 20,891, this is a less common issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 59% of production. The obverse features a female figure wearing a feathered headdress, representing Liberty in the guise of a Native American princess, similar to but distinct from the gold dollar design and the reverse displays a wreath of tobacco, wheat, corn, and cotton enclosing the denomination 3 DOLLARS and date. Philadelphia-only production. Mintage was modest as the denomination failed to gain commercial traction. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $1.4K to $8.7K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 5.02 grams, 20.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
