Description

The 1857 (D) Liberty Gold Dollar represents a Dahlonega Mint issue from the Large Indian Princess Head Gold Dollars 1856-1889 series. The Dahlonega Mint struck 3,533 gold dollars dated 1857. The obverse features a female figure wearing a feathered headdress, representing Liberty in the guise of a Native American princess with a larger, more detailed head design and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR. Charlotte and Dahlonega struck gold dollars alongside Philadelphia and San Francisco. Coined at the Dahlonega Mint, a small Georgia facility that produced gold coins from local deposits for just 23 years before the Civil War. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.672 grams, 15 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7546.
