Description
The 1856 (S) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is a Gold Quarter Eagle minted at the San Francisco Mint, within the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 72,120, this is a less common issue — ranked 4th of 5 mint variants by mintage, with 15% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Final year of Dahlonega quarter eagle production. The 1856-D is a scarce late Southern mint issue. San Francisco's storied mint, born of the California Gold Rush, has evolved into the primary producer of U.S. proof coins. Estimated market value ranges from $948 to $16K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7781.
