CU-1c-1856-02 Rim Cud

Description

Cataloged in the Thurman & Margolis Cud Book (LCC File), the CU-1c-1856-02 is a rim cud on the 1856 Braided Hair Coronet Head Large Cent, Slanted 5 variety. Rim cuds result from a complete die break extending from the rim inward, causing that die section to drop away and leaving a raised, unstruck blob of metal on struck coins. The Slanted 5 designation refers to the 1856 date punch, in which the numeral 5 exhibits a characteristically slanted appearance compared to the upright 5 of the companion variety — a distinction recognized as a separately cataloged variety. Braided Hair Coronet Head Large Cents, produced from 1839 through 1857, are struck in copper and represent the final large-cent design type before the small cent was adopted in 1857. Rim cud varieties on late large-cent dates carry collector interest both as terminal-design pieces and as die-failure examples on an obsolete denomination.
