Description
Dating to the pre-Civil War era of American coinage, this rim cud on an 1856 Braided Hair Coronet Head Cent documents a die rim fracture on one of the final large cent issues. A rim cud represents the loss of part of the die's rim gutter: on the coin it appears as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course. Christian Gobrecht's Braided Hair design, struck at the Philadelphia Mint from 1839 through 1857, represents the last of the large copper cents — heavy coins approximately 27.5mm in diameter that would soon be replaced by the smaller Flying Eagle Cent in 1857.
