Description
The 1855 Indian Princess Three Dollar is a dollar minted at the Philadelphia Mint, within the Indian Princess Three Dollars 1854-1889 series. The U.S. Mint produced 50,555 examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 88% of production. The obverse features a female figure wearing a feathered headdress, representing Liberty in the guise of a Native American princess, similar to but distinct from the gold dollar design and the reverse displays a wreath of tobacco, wheat, corn, and cotton enclosing the denomination 3 DOLLARS and date. The 1855-S is the only San Francisco three dollar gold piece ever struck (mintage 6,600). Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $1.4K to $7.9K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 5.02 grams, 20.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7972.
