Description

Judd-163, Pollock-189, rated High R.6. A later restrike of the hook-neck flying eagle cent pattern, produced from the same dies as the original J-163 but struck at a later date for collector sale. The design elements are identical: the flying eagle obverse with thirteen stars and date, paired with the undersized ONE CENT wreath reverse on a large cent-diameter planchet. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Restrikes of the J-163 were produced during the 1860s-1870s restrike era at the Philadelphia Mint and may exhibit a more advanced die state, with possible signs of die fatigue or light surface corrosion from the storage period between original and restrike production. Both original and restrike strikings are rated at the same rarity level, indicating the total known population is small and roughly evenly divided between the two issues.
