Description
A dollar from the Philadelphia Mint, the 1854 Indian Princess Three Dollar belongs to the Indian Princess Three Dollars 1854-1889 series. The U.S. Mint produced 138,618 examples, making this the highest mintage among 3 variants, accounting for 85% of the year's production. The obverse features a female figure wearing a feathered headdress, representing Liberty in the guise of a Native American princess, similar to but distinct from the gold dollar design and the reverse displays a wreath of tobacco, wheat, corn, and cotton enclosing the denomination 3 DOLLARS and date. First year of the three dollar denomination. Philadelphia, Dahlonega, and New Orleans all struck coins. The 1854-D (mintage 1,120) is a major rarity. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $1.5K to $5.8K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 5.02 grams, 20.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7969.
