Description
Part of the Liberty Head Half Eagles 1839-1908 series, the 1854 (D) Liberty Head Half Eagle - Medium D is a Gold Half Eagle from the Dahlonega Mint. The Dahlonega Mint struck 56,413 half eagles dated 1854 in all; how many have the Medium D is not recorded. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons. NGC and Doug Winter count four known examples of the 1854-S; older references, among them CoinWeek's No Motto guide, give three. Dahlonega's Georgia mint operated from 1838 to 1861, processing Appalachian gold into coins. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.65 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #88258.
