Description
The 1853 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is a Gold Quarter Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint, belonging to the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. The U.S. Mint produced 1.4 million examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 100% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. New Orleans struck its final quarter eagles before a hiatus for this denomination at that facility. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $948 to $1.5K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7767.
