Description
This undated round gold quarter dollar is Breen-Gillio BG-201, a Period One piece of California fractional gold that PCGS attributes to 1853. NGC lists it with a Liberty head on the obverse. Breen and Gillio put the small change that San Francisco jewelers made in 1852-1857 (1852-1856 in their first edition) into Period One; most of these pieces weigh less than the gold their face value called for (Mike Locke, 2013), but they are the ones known to have been used as money. Catalogue number: BG-201. PCGS number 10386.
