About This Coin
The 1852 Liberty Head Eagle is a United States Gold Eagle from the Liberty Head Eagles 1838-1907 series. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, while the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Designed by Christian Gobrecht. Struck in gold, weighing 16.7 grams, 26.8 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Produced at the New Orleans and Philadelphia Mints. The Liberty Head Eagle was produced from 1838 to 1907, spanning nearly seven decades and multiple eras of American history. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added in 1866. Production occurred at Philadelphia, San Francisco, Carson City, New Orleans, and Denver. Carson City eagles are among the most sought-after U.S. gold coins. The 1858 is rare, and the 1907 Liberty issues overlap with the introduction of the Indian Head design.
