Description
Judd-124e is a die trial or composition variant of the 1850 unperforated ring cent pattern, struck in an experimental alloy. The "e" suffix in the Judd catalog indicates an off-metal or variant composition striking from the standard J-124 dies. The obverse features the standard ring cent design with "CENT" above and "1850" below, flanked by ornamental rosettes around a central circle outline. The reverse displays "USA" above and "ONE TENTH SILVER" along the sides and bottom. This piece represents the Mint's systematic testing of various metallic compositions for the proposed small cent, as different alloys offered trade-offs between cost, durability, striking quality, and public acceptance. The 1850 ring cent series encompasses at least six major Judd numbers (J-119 through J-124) across billon, copper, and other compositions, with additional suffixed varieties like this one documenting the breadth of the Mint's experimental program during Chief Engraver Longacre's tenure.
