Description
The 1850 (D) Liberty Head Half Eagle is a Gold Half Eagle minted at the Dahlonega Mint, within the Liberty Head Half Eagles 1839-1908 series. The Dahlonega Mint struck 43,984 half eagles dated 1850. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons. Peak Gold Rush production. Philadelphia half eagle mintage reached high levels from abundant gold supplies. Dahlonega's Georgia mint operated from 1838 to 1861, processing Appalachian gold into coins. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.65 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8245.
