Description

The 1849 J.S. Ormsby Plain Edge Gold Half Eagle is one of two edge varieties produced by this pioneer Sacramento-area private coiner. John S. Ormsby was among the very first individuals to establish private gold coinage operations in California, recognizing the urgent need for coined money in the booming mining regions around Sacramento. The plain edge variety represents what was the initial production configuration, as plain edges required no additional tooling beyond the obverse and reverse dies and a simple collar. Ormsby's half eagle, or five dollar gold piece, was the most practical denomination for everyday commerce in the goldfields. While ten and twenty dollar pieces served well for larger transactions, the five dollar coin struck a balance between meaningful value and everyday utility. Miners could use half eagles to purchase supplies, pay for meals and lodging, or settle accounts without the awkwardness of measuring and weighing raw gold dust for each transaction. The distinction between the plain edge and reeded edge Ormsby half eagles is significant for numismatic study, as it indicates a deliberate change in the manufacturing process during the coin's production run. The addition of reeding to the edge required either a segmented collar or a separate edge-lettering process, indicating that Ormsby invested in improved equipment as his operation matured.

Rarity Notes

Very rare. The plain edge Ormsby half eagle is one of the scarcer California territorial half eagle types.
