Description
The 1849 J.S. Ormsby Gold Eagle is the ten dollar denomination produced by John S. Ormsby, one of the earliest private coiners in California. Ormsby operated in the Sacramento area, strategically positioned near the placer mining districts of the American River where gold was first discovered at Sutter's Mill. Sacramento served as the primary gateway to the northern mines, and the need for coined money was particularly acute in this rapidly growing settlement where miners arrived daily with gold dust and nuggets but few reliable coins. Ormsby began producing gold coins in 1849, making him among the first private issuers in California to convert raw gold into coined form. His eagle, or ten dollar piece, was a substantial coin representing significant purchasing power even in the inflated economy of Gold Rush California. The design features Ormsby's name and denomination, struck from native California placer gold that varied somewhat in fineness depending on the source of the raw material. As one of the pioneer private coiners in the Sacramento Valley, Ormsby's operations predated the more organized and better-capitalized firms that would later dominate California private coinage. His coins circulated during the most chaotic period of the Gold Rush, when California had no established financial infrastructure and the nearest United States Mint facilities were thousands of miles away. The Ormsby eagle represents a practical response to urgent commercial necessity, providing miners and merchants with a recognizable medium of exchange at a time when raw gold dust was the only available alternative.
Rarity Notes
Very rare. The Ormsby eagle is one of the scarcest denominations from this early Sacramento issuer.
