Description
The 1849 (D) Liberty Head Half Eagle, struck at the Dahlonega Mint, is part of the Liberty Head Half Eagles 1839-1908 collection. The Dahlonega Mint struck 39,036 half eagles dated 1849. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons. Gold Rush-era production at Philadelphia surged. Charlotte and Dahlonega maintained modest output. The Dahlonega Mint in Georgia struck gold coins from 1838 until its closure at the start of the Civil War in 1861. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.65 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8242.
