Description

The 1847 (O) Liberty Head Eagle is a Gold Eagle produced at the New Orleans Mint as part of the Liberty Head Eagles 1838-1907 series. Total mintage reached 571,500. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, while the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Designed by Christian Gobrecht. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 16.7 grams, 26.8 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8598. The Liberty Head Eagle was produced from 1838 to 1907, spanning nearly seven decades and multiple eras of American history. Carson City eagles are among the most sought-after U.S. gold coins. The 1858 is rare, and the 1907 Liberty issues overlap with the introduction of the Indian Head design.
