Description
The 1847 (O) Liberty Head Eagle is a Gold Eagle from the New Orleans Mint, belonging to the Liberty Head Eagles 1838-1907 series. The U.S. Mint produced 571,500 examples, making this the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. New Orleans production alongside Philadelphia. Eagles were the largest gold denomination in regular use. Coined at the New Orleans Mint, which served the nation's southern economy from 1838 to 1909 and produced coins prized for their regional character. Estimated market value ranges from $2.6K to $38K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 16.7 grams, 26.8 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
