Description
The 1847 Liberty Head Half Eagle - MPD, 7 in Denticles is a Gold Half Eagle minted at the Philadelphia Mint, within the Liberty Head Half Eagles 1839-1908 series. The Philadelphia Mint struck 915,981 half eagles dated 1847 in all; how many show the 7 in the denticles is not recorded. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons. Peak antebellum production at multiple mints; half eagles served as the primary domestic gold coin. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.65 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8232.
