Description
CU-1C-1847-05R records a reverse rim cud on the 1847 Braided Hair Coronet Head Cent. Philadelphia struck 6,183,669 large cents in 1847 across an unknown number of die pairs. Christian Gobrecht's Braided Hair obverse, with its detailed coronet, braided hair arrangement, and surrounding thirteen stars, paired with the wreath reverse bearing ONE CENT within a laurel wreath, creates a design where rim breaks at different clock positions fall beside different design elements — the date, the stars, or the wreath's botanical framework. The 28mm diameter of the large cent, substantially bigger than the modern 19mm cent, meant each die had a proportionally larger rim area subject to fracture.
